Weener is the main town of the Rheiderland, the low-lying corner of East Frisia that lies west of the Ems and runs up to the Netherlands. On a map it sits at the river's edge, with a small harbour cut into the bank and a compact town centre behind it. Around it the land is flat and open, divided by drainage ditches and protected by dykes.
For centuries the town lived from shipping, trade and the surrounding farmland, and the old harbour remains the heart of its layout. Its Georgskirche houses an organ by Arp Schnitger, one of the great Baroque organ builders of northern Germany, and the town is also home to the Organeum, a museum devoted to keyboard instruments.
