Abbeville lies in the Somme valley in Picardy, about twenty kilometres upstream from the Baie de Somme. The river splits into several arms and canals as it passes through town, so the old centre is laced with water. Streets cross it by short bridges, and the valley floor to the north-west opens into wet meadows and ponds. Low chalk slopes rise on either side.
The town's landmark is the Collégiale Saint-Vulfran, a Flamboyant Gothic church whose tall facade survived heavy bombing in May 1940 that destroyed much of the historic centre. The rebuilt town kept its medieval street plan in many places. Abbeville is also remembered for the Chevalier de La Barre, executed here in 1766, a case Voltaire made famous.
