Al Quşayr lies south-west of Homs, on the fertile plain of the Orontes river, not far from the Lebanese border. The town is compact, with streets gathered around its centre and roads heading out to Homs, to the border and to surrounding villages. The area has a long history. The ancient site of Kadesh, known for the battle between Egyptian and Hittite armies in the thirteenth century BC, lies nearby on the Orontes.
