Alameda sits just off Oakland, separated from it by the Oakland Estuary, a narrow tidal channel that turns the city into an island reachable by bridges and two underwater tubes. On a map the outline is long and low, with the main island to the north and Bay Farm Island lying to the south beside the airport.
Inside, the streets form a calm, mostly regular grid lined with one of the largest concentrations of Victorian houses in the Bay Area.
