Alappuzha sits on a narrow strip of land in central Kerala, with the Arabian Sea on the west and the backwaters of Vembanad Lake spreading east. From above, the town looks like a grid laid across water. Straight canals cut through the centre, and the streets run beside them, so roads and waterways trace the same lines.
