On a map the river dominates, swinging through the area in broad loops, and the town sits against it, its streets arranged in a mostly regular grid that thins out into fields and scattered farmsteads along the banks and across the plain.
The name is old. A settlement called Nu‘maniyah on the Tigris appears in medieval Arab geographies, and the river crossing here has long made it a waypoint between Baghdad and the lower Tigris.
