Antwerp grew on the right bank of the Scheldt, where the river bends and deep water allowed ships to come close to land. The old centre fans out from the riverbank around the Grote Markt and the Cathedral of Our Lady, with narrow medieval streets that curve and branch. On a map this core forms a dense half-circle pressed against the river.
Around it, the Leien, a line of broad boulevards built on the route of the former city walls, trace a clear arc from north to south. Beyond that, the R1 ring road forms a larger loop, and the railway approaches the domed Antwerp-Centraal station from the east.
