Aschersleben lies on the northeastern edge of the Harz foothills, in the farming country of Saxony-Anhalt. It is counted among the oldest documented towns in the state, and its plan still shows that age. The historic centre forms a compact oval of irregular streets and squares, and the later districts spread out around it in a broader, more regular pattern.
The line of the old fortifications can still be traced on the map, because a green ring and several preserved towers mark where the walls once stood. The small river Eine passes through the town.
