Ashford lies in the Weald of Kent, where several branches of the Great Stour river come together. From above, the town centre is surrounded by a tight loop of road that once served as a one-way ring and was later reworked into a shared-space scheme. Inside it is a small, older core, while outside it the town spreads widely in every direction.
Ashford is a railway town at heart. Several lines converge here, and the station is a stop on the high-speed line to London.
