Aurich stands in the middle of East Frisia in Lower Saxony, far enough inland to be surrounded by level farmland, moor and scattered woods rather than dykes and tidal flats. For centuries Aurich was the seat of the East Frisian counts and later princes, and the castle and its grounds still sit close to the centre. The Ems-Jade Canal passes the town, a nineteenth-century waterway linking Emden and Wilhelmshaven.
