Bādāmi, in Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, was once Vatapi, the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty from the sixth century. The town lies in a ravine between two rugged sandstone outcrops, and the map shows this clearly: a dense cluster of streets squeezed into the lowland between high rock.
At the centre is Agastya Lake, a reservoir held between the cliffs, with temples along its edges. The famous rock-cut cave temples are carved into the southern cliff face, and fortifications run across the heights.
