Banepā lies in Kavrepalanchok district, a short distance beyond the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, in a small basin surrounded by terraced hills. The Arniko Highway, which runs from Kathmandu toward the Tibetan border, passes through the town, and on a map it forms the strongest line, with newer buildings stretched along it and the older quarters set slightly apart.
The historic core is a Newar town of narrow lanes, brick houses and small squares, and its compact, irregular street pattern stands out clearly from the linear growth along the highway.
