Banting is the main town of the Kuala Langat district in Selangor, on the flat coastal plain southwest of Kuala Lumpur. Its centre is compact, a small grid of shophouse streets, while newer housing estates spread out around it in curving loops and cul-de-sacs. Beyond those estates the map fills with the long, straight lines of plantation roads and drainage channels.
The Langat River winds past the town on its way to the sea, one of the few curves in an otherwise ruled landscape. To the west, the coast of the Strait of Malacca is only a short drive away, with the beach at Morib the best-known stretch nearby.
