Bayt Jālā sits on high ground immediately west of Bethlehem in the West Bank, so close that the two towns merge on the map. It is a historically Christian town, and its churches and monasteries are part of its identity. The terrain is steep, with slopes terraced for olive trees and orchards, and the town has long been known for its olives and apricots.
From above, the streets follow the contours of the hills in long curves and switchbacks, with houses built in rows along them. There is little that could be called a grid.
