Bergschenhoek lies just north of Rotterdam in South Holland and is part of the municipality of Lansingerland. Its map is a lesson in Dutch water management. Almost every line is straight. Drainage ditches run in parallel strips, roads follow dykes, and polder boundaries divide the land into long rectangles. The older village core sits along its main roads, and newer districts spread out around it in planned blocks.
The ground here lies below sea level, so water defines the shapes as much as the streets do. To the east lie the Rottemeren, a chain of lakes and recreation areas along the River Rotte, which give the map softer, irregular outlines.
