Binzhou lies on the broad, level North China Plain in northern Shandong, close to where the Yellow River approaches its delta. The river passes along the southern side of the urban area, held between high embankments, and the city spreads north from it in a wide, regular pattern of avenues and blocks. Canals, reservoirs and ponds break up the flat ground.
Much of the modern city was laid out in recent decades, so the map shows long, straight roads and spacious districts. Huimin County, part of the prefecture, is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War, and keeps a memorial to him.
