Bokhtar sits in the broad valley of the Vakhsh River in southwestern Tajikistan, and from above it is surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated fields crossed by canals. The city itself is laid out largely on a grid of wide avenues and regular blocks. This reflects planning from the Soviet period, when it was known as Kurgan-Tyube.
As the administrative centre of Khatlon Province, Bokhtar serves a large farming region long devoted to cotton and other irrigated crops. The river flows to the west of the city.
