Breña is one of the smallest districts of Lima, a few square kilometres just west of the historic centre. On a map it has almost no open space. Rectangular blocks follow a regular grid, and major avenues such as Arica, Brasil and Venezuela cut through or run along its edges and connect it to the rest of the city.
Breña has been a working, residential district for generations, with shops, schools and small workshops crowded into its streets. Its best-known landmark is the Basilica of María Auxiliadora, run by the Salesians, a large church that has long been a focus of neighbourhood life. The district borders Cercado de Lima, Jesús María, Pueblo Libre and San Miguel.
