Bur Dubai lies on the western bank of Dubai Creek, the saltwater inlet around which the city first developed. On a map the Creek is the main feature, a broad curving channel with Deira on the other side. Along the Bur Dubai waterfront, streets form a tight, irregular network of lanes, souks and courtyard houses, much finer-grained than the wide highways and large blocks that make up most of modern Dubai.
This is where you'll find the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, a restored quarter of lanes and wind-tower houses, as well as Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in the city.
