Cairns sits on the east coast of Far North Queensland, on the western shore of Trinity Inlet, with the Coral Sea just beyond. The city centre is laid out in a compact grid of wide streets running down to the Esplanade and the waterfront. To the west, steep ranges rise sharply behind the suburbs, pressing the city into a narrow band between mountains and sea.
Cairns is best known as a base for visiting the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest, both World Heritage areas.
