Carmarthen rises from the north bank of the River Tywi in southwest Wales. The river loops wide across its flood meadows below the town, and bridges carry roads over to the south. On the higher ground, a knot of medieval streets gathers around the site of the castle. Newer housing spreads north and west across the slopes beyond it.
Carmarthen is often described as one of the oldest towns in Wales. The Romans had a fort and town here called Moridunum, and the remains of its amphitheatre still exist on the eastern side.
