Comodoro Rivadavia lines the shore of the Gulf of San Jorge in Patagonia, and from above it looks like a long ribbon of settlement between the sea and a steep landscape. The centre sits on a narrow strip of flat land, with Cerro Chenque rising right behind it. Neighbourhoods continue along the coast in both directions.
Because level ground is scarce, the districts appear as separate clusters joined by the coastal road, each set in its own hollow or small plain. Streets climb the slopes in short grids that stop at the edge of the bare hills. Along the shoreline, the port and seafront avenue follow the curve of the bay.
In 1907, workers drilling for water here struck oil, and the discovery made Comodoro Rivadavia the base of Argentina's oil industry.
