Corfu town sits on the eastern coast of its island, facing the mainland across a narrow strait. The Old Fortress occupies a small promontory separated from the town by a channel dug as a moat. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on any Greek coastline. The New Fortress rises on the other side of the old town, and between them lies a maze of narrow streets.
The old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its layout reflects centuries of Venetian rule, followed by French and British periods.
