Eau Claire is in west-central Wisconsin, at the confluence of the Chippewa and Eau Claire rivers, and that meeting point defines its map. From above, the rivers loop through the city in broad curves, and downtown sits on the point of land where they join. The city grew as a lumber town in the nineteenth century, using the rivers to move logs from the northern forests. Today it is home to the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, whose campus lies along a bend of the Chippewa.
