From above it looks very different from Hawaii's older towns: curving collector roads enclose neighbourhoods of looping streets and cul-de-sacs, a pattern typical of master-planned development. The land was once part of the extensive sugar cane fields of the ʻEwa Plantation, which shaped this area for much of the twentieth century. Residential development by Gentry Homes, which gave the community its name, began in the later part of the century as the plantation era closed.
