Gjirokastër rises up the slope of Mount Mali i Gjerë in southern Albania, looking out over the broad Drino valley. On a map, the old town is unmistakable. Narrow, twisting lanes wrap around the hillside, following the contours in tight curves, and all converge toward the long fortress on the ridge above. The newer town spreads out more regularly on the lower ground toward the valley floor.
The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its Ottoman-era tower houses built of grey stone and roofed with stone slabs. That gives Gjirokastër its nickname, the city of stone. The writer Ismail Kadare was born here and set one of his best-known novels in the town. The castle, one of the largest in the Balkans, dominates the skyline and the map alike.
