Gwadar lies on the Makran coast of Balochistan, on the Arabian Sea near the border with Iran. Its shape is one of the most distinctive on any coastline. The old town sits on a narrow sandy isthmus that links the mainland to a rocky headland, with a bay curving on each side. Gwadar belonged to the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman until 1958, when it was transferred to Pakistan.
