Traitors' Bay
A broad bay on the south coast with Atuona at its head. The village's short grid of streets sits on the small valley floor, the densest set of lines on the island.

Hiva-Oa Map Poster & Print
Hiva Oa is one of the larger islands in the Marquesas, in French Polynesia. It is volcanic and very steep. Seen from above, it forms a long, curving body with sharp ridges running down to the sea. Deep valleys separate these ridges, and there is little flat land except where valleys meet the coast in small bays. Roads are few, and many of them follow ridgelines or hug the shore.
Atuona, the main village, sits at the head of Traitors' Bay on the south coast. The painter Paul Gauguin spent his last years there, and he is buried in the cemetery above the village. So is the singer Jacques Brel. On the northeast coast, the valley of Puamau holds a well-known archaeological site with large stone tiki figures.
A Hiva Oa map poster turns this landscape into strong, contrasting shapes. The coastline is jagged and deeply notched. A thin thread of roads links a few villages at the mouths of the valleys, and there are wide blank spaces where the mountains rise. It is a poster about topography and remoteness more than about streets.

Valley villages
Settlements such as Puamau sit where steep valleys open to the sea. On the map each one is a small cluster of lines, separated from the next by ridges.
Winding island roads
The few roads twist along ridges and cliffs between the valleys. Their looping, switchback lines are the clearest sign on paper of how mountainous the interior is.

Bakit Hiva-Oa
Isang mapang may kahulugan
Hiva Oa draws people who are interested in Gauguin, Brel and Marquesan culture. Anyone who has made the long journey there tends to treasure the memory. The island's dramatic outline makes for a strong print, and it suits walls where a single, bold shape works better than a busy street plan.
You can set your own title and subtitle, perhaps the date of a crossing or a village name, and edit the coordinates line. Styles include Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. A free 900 px preview lets you check the layout before you buy the $9 HD files or a printed poster.
