Huissen lies in Gelderland between Arnhem and Nijmegen, on the low land shaped by the Rhine. From above, the old town is a compact oval of streets that once sat inside walls, surrounded by newer residential districts and then a wide band of floodplain, meadows and dykes. The river and its embankments form the strongest lines on the map.
The town has an unusual past for the Netherlands: for centuries Huissen belonged to the Duchy of Cleves and later to Prussia, and only became Dutch in 1816.
