From above, the town is a dense core of irregular lanes surrounded by long field boundaries and scattered outcrops of rock. The town gives its name to a taluk that also contains the temple village of Aihole, famous for its early Chalukya stone temples, and the historic sites of Pattadakal and Badami are not far off.
