Ibotirama sits on the banks of the São Francisco, one of Brazil's great rivers, in the semi-arid interior of Bahia. On a map the river is the dominant element: a wide band of water with sandbanks and islands, bending past the town, with the urban grid pressed against its bank. Across the water, flatter land with scattered farms stretches toward the horizon.
The town is an important crossing point. The BR-242 highway, which links coastal Bahia with the west of the state, crosses the São Francisco here on a long bridge, and much of the town's traffic and trade depends on that route.
