Jacobabad lies in the far north of Sindh, close to the border with Balochistan, on the wide alluvial plain west of the Indus. The land is almost perfectly flat, and water arrives through a network of irrigation canals rather than natural rivers. The town was founded in 1847 by the British officer John Jacob, and its name means Jacob's town.
