Jammu lies where the plains of Punjab meet the first ridges of the Shivalik hills, and its map shows that meeting clearly. The Tawi River runs through the city, separating the older town on the higher northern bank from newer districts across the water. The old city sits on raised ground above the river, with dense lanes around temples, markets and the former Dogra palaces of Mubarak Mandi.
