Kālpi sits on the south bank of the Yamuna in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, part of the Bundelkhand region. The old town stands on high ground above the river. On a map its tight, irregular lanes contrast with the broad sweep of the Yamuna and the sandbanks that appear along it in the dry season.
Around the town, the land is cut by the deep ravines typical of the Yamuna and its tributaries. They show up as broken, branching shapes where roads and fields cannot run straight.
