Kamigyō-ku is one of the central wards of Kyoto, and on a map it shows the city's historic grid very clearly. Narrow streets run north–south and east–west in a regular pattern that goes back to the capital's original plan. The Kamo River marks the ward's eastern side, a long diagonal line against the straight streets.
The biggest shape in the ward is the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the park around it, a large rectangle of open space. To the west lies Nishijin, long known for silk weaving, where the blocks are finer and more tightly packed.
