Katsushika is one of Tokyo's 23 special wards, in the far east of the city. On a map it is almost entirely flat and densely built, bounded on the east by the Edo River, which separates it from Chiba, and crossed by the Naka River and other waterways. Narrow residential lanes fill the spaces between rail lines, stations and small shopping streets.
The ward is known for its old downtown character. Shibamata, with the Taishakuten temple and its approach street, is famous as the home of Tora-san in the long-running film series Otoko wa Tsurai yo. Kameari appears in the manga Kochikame, and statues of its characters stand around the station.
