Kislovodsk lies in a basin in the northern foothills of the Caucasus, where the Olkhovka and Berezovka rivers meet. The name refers to the naturally carbonated, slightly sour water of the Narzan springs, which made the town one of the best-known resorts of the Russian Empire. The Kurortny Park was laid out in the nineteenth century and extends from the centre up the Olkhovka valley into the hills. It is among the largest urban parks in Europe.
