Kotdwāra sits exactly where the flat Gangetic plains end and the first Himalayan foothills begin, in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The map shows this change sharply. To the south, fields and roads spread across level ground; to the north, the land folds into forested hills cut by narrow valleys.
