Laukkai lies in the far northeast of Shan State, a short distance from Myanmar's border with China's Yunnan Province. It serves as the main town of the Kokang Self-Administered Zone, a mountainous area whose population is largely ethnic Kokang, a Chinese-speaking community. The terrain around the town is steep and broken, and the street plan has to work around it.
From above, Laukkai reads as a settlement fitted into lower ground between hills, with roads following the contours and branching up the side slopes.
