Mansfield lies on the southern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth area and spreads across parts of Tarrant, Johnson and Ellis counties. It began in the 1850s around a grist mill built by Ralph Man and Julian Feild, and their names were combined to form the town's name. On a map the original town appears as a small grid of blocks around Main Street.
Around that core, Mansfield has grown into a patchwork of residential neighbourhoods with looping streets and cul-de-sacs, the typical pattern of North Texas suburbs.
