Maqin County lies in the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai, high on the Tibetan Plateau. Its seat, Dawu, sits at an altitude of around 3,700 metres. The county takes its name from Amne Machin, a sacred mountain in Tibetan tradition.
