From above, it is a textbook postwar suburb: long parallel streets, regular blocks of single-family houses, and main roads such as Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road cutting across from east to west, with the Long Island Rail Road running alongside.
South of Merrick Road the pattern changes. Residential canals reach inland from South Oyster Bay, and streets become narrow peninsulas with houses backing onto the water. Beyond them lie marshes and barrier islands facing the Atlantic. Running north to south through the community, the Massapequa Preserve protects a green corridor of streams, ponds and woodland.
The Baldwin acting brothers grew up here, and the community is familiar to anyone who has driven the Southern State Parkway or Sunrise Highway.
