Mauá is part of the ABC region on the southeastern edge of Greater São Paulo, and its map is shaped by uneven terrain. Instead of a single regular grid, neighbourhoods follow ridges and valleys, so the streets turn and branch constantly. The old railway between Santos and Jundiaí runs through the city, and the historic centre grew up around its station.
Industrial areas occupy large plots along the rail line and major roads, including the Capuava refinery near the border with Santo André, whose tanks and pipework form an unusually geometric patch on the map. The city is named after Irineu Evangelista de Sousa, the Viscount of Mauá, a nineteenth-century industrialist who promoted Brazil's early railways.
