Menghuan is the historic name of the town at the heart of Mangshi, the capital of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in western Yunnan. On the map it occupies a wide, level valley floor, with a grid of modern avenues laid across flat land and older, more irregular lanes near the centre. Hills rise on the edges of the basin, framing the town.
Dehong has a strong Dai cultural presence, and Theravada Buddhist temples and pagodas appear throughout the area. The large golden pagoda on a hill above the town is one of its best-known sights.
