Minamiashigara lies in western Kanagawa, where the flat ground of the Ashigara plain begins to rise towards the Hakone mountains. The map reads as two halves: a denser pattern of houses, roads and small fields in the lowland to the east, and to the west a steadily emptier surface of ridges, valleys and forest tracks.
A railway line ends here at Daiyūzan Station, the terminus of the Izuhakone Daiyūzan Line, and the town's streets gather loosely around it.
