From above, it is a compact settlement in a valley among forested hills, its streets gathered along the main road that arrives from Imphal and continues to the border crossing a short distance beyond the town.
The town is one of the main land gateways between India and Southeast Asia, lying on the route of the Asian Highway network and long important for cross-border trade.
