Scattered islands
Dozens of small islands and islets, many of them volcanic in origin, dot the lake and give it a speckled, intricate surface on the map.

Ang mapa
Mývatn Map Poster & Print
Mývatn lies in the volcanic highlands of north Iceland, and its map looks unlike any other lake. The shoreline is deeply indented with bays and inlets, and the water is scattered with many small islands and islets formed by volcanic activity. The ring road runs along the northern and eastern shores, with the village of Reykjahlíð at the northeastern corner.
The lake was formed by a basalt lava eruption about 2,300 years ago. Its name means midge lake, after the swarms of midges that breed there and feed its well-known bird life, especially ducks. Around it are pseudocraters at Skútustaðir, the lava formations of Dimmuborgir and the tephra cone of Hverfjall.
A Mývatn map poster turns this broken, island-dotted surface into a detailed and intriguing composition. The shallow water, the islets and the surrounding lava fields create a pattern that invites close looking, and the ring road frames it all with a single continuous line.

Skútustaðir craters
Along the southern shore, pseudocraters formed when lava flowed over wet ground create clusters of small rounded shapes near the water.
Ring road frame
Iceland's main ring road follows the northern and eastern shores, drawing a clean line that frames the lake and passes through Reykjahlíð.
