Obuase, also written Obuasi, lies in the south of Ghana's Ashanti Region, surrounded by rolling, forested hills. On a map the town's streets follow the terrain rather than a grid, curving around ridges and valleys. The town grew around gold mining, which began here on an industrial scale in the late nineteenth century and continues today.
