Old Swan is a district in the east of Liverpool, a few miles from the city centre, where several main roads meet. On a map that junction is the obvious focus: routes arrive from different directions and converge in a knot of shops and crossings, while rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill the spaces in between with a close, regular rhythm.
The district takes its name from an old inn that stood at the crossroads, a reminder that this was once a stopping point on the road out of Liverpool toward Prescot.
