Its centre follows the colonial pattern common across the region: a regular grid of numbered streets around a main square, with the Franciscan church and convent facing the plaza.
The town is known as the orchard of Yucatán. Citrus groves and other fruit farms surround it, and its market is one of the busiest in the region for fresh produce. Around the grid, the map loosens into plots and orchards divided by straight farm roads.
